Daniel was a very keen triathlete and cyclist throughout his life until an accident in 2010, when he broke his foot very badly. He needed a specialist trike to get back into his fitness regime  and lift himself out of depression.

Daniel's active lifestyle went down a gear while he recovered from his injury and two subsequent operations to fix nerve damage. 2015 was a year mostly spent on crutches. The pain in his foot means Daniel is no longer able to ride a traditional bicycle. He also suffers from osteoarthritis which severely affects his wrist and thumbs, making traditional handle bars on a bicycle difficult to use.

Daniel was becoming increasingly frustrated and depressed about being unable to exercise and commute on a bike, as he had done in the past, and applied to the Ben Fund for assistance to purchase a recumbent trike that would meet his needs and allow him to remain as active as possible. The Benevolent Fund agreed to part fund the purchase of the equipment and he visited the Ben Fund office on his first journey, covering 350 miles, to thank the team personally for the assistance.
